Royal raindrops crab1/8/2024 ![]() I am surprised that flowering crabs like the Royal Raindrops and its relative, the Golden raindrops, are not more popular with their year round showy and disease-free characteristics. Buy them grown on a high standard so that you can walk and mow under them or plant them as street trees. The form is broad upright and will most likely form a large round crown of about 20' in diameter. Tiny, persistent, bright red fruits appearing in late summer are prized by wildlife and add winter interest. Fall color is a medley of bronze, orange and purple. Refined, uniquely shaped leaves emerge glossy deep purple and maintain their rich color through the heat of summer. They are clean and appear to be free of insect and disease problems in most of the PNW. ‘Royal Raindrops’ Crabapple’s beautiful purple cutleaf leaves emerge in spring and persist that color until autumn changes the purple to a brilliant orange In May expect masses of deep pink flowers to emerge to cover the tree. Superior disease resistance, adaptability, plus heat and drought tolerance make this unique crabapple a crown jewel among trees. They grow fast and are easy to transplant. One of the best of the newer crabapples, with vibrant pink to red spring flowers followed by showy red-purple fruit. Here is a link to a very detailed description of this tree. This crab has small red fruits that last all winter long. If you like dark colored trees, then you must have one of these. Royal Raindrops Crab has cutleaf purple leaves all summer long and they turn orange in the fall. The fruit is so tiny it is insignificant. This tree will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and is best pruned in late winter once the threat of extreme cold has passed. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other landscape plants with less refined foliage. Fall colors are red to golden yellow depending on the season. Royal Raindrops Flowering Crabapple is a deciduous tree with an upright spreading habit of growth. Eye-popping magenta pink blooms, deep purple cutleaf foliage, sparkling red fruits and bright fall color give all-season appeal to this easy-care flowering. The significant difference is the dark burgundy color of the leaves and fruit, and of course, the incredibly spectacular dark pink flowers. ![]() The early leaves are cutleaf just like the Golden Raindrops, the fruit is very tiny, and the form is straight and predictable when grown with a straight leader. Yes, if you look closely at the leaves, form, and fruit, you can see the resemblance. OK, now my second favorite flowering crab tree is the Royal Raindrops, the close relative of my first favorite Flowering crab, the Golden Raindrops.
